Diploma of Photoimaging

Course Code: CUV50407

The Diploma of Photoimaging is a hands-on 18 month part time course (6 terms) that covers a wide range of studio and location photography practices.  This qualification reflects the role of photography practitioners who possess a sound theoretical and practical knowledge and use a range of specialised and technical competencies to plan, carry out and evaluate photoimaging services.  The qualification has application across a range of industry contexts, including commercial, domestic portrait, media, wedding, illustrative, institutional and art photography.

Teaching is conducted face-to-face in a classroom environment that includes theory and practical work in the College studio and on location. Students are provided with both supervised and unsupervised assignment tasks to develop their skills.

A minimum of five projects are completed for the student’s portfolio, including commercial photography for a real client, portraiture and fashion photography, media photography for a publication, illustrative photography and art photography for an exhibition.

The College enrolls students every term (9 weeks) and takes a maximum of 12 students per class.  The course duration is 54 weeks with students attending 6 contact hours per week.  Classes are conducted Monday and Wednesday evenings between 6.00pm and 9.00pm, with some flexible weekend days where industry field trips and location work may be organised. Students are required to supply their own digital SLR camera and tripod.

Course subjects include: Commercial Photography, Stock Image Photography, Portrait/Fashion Photography, Illustrative Photography, Art Photography and Media Photography.

This course has a prerequisite of either the Certificate IV in Photoimaging or equivalent industry experience with the presentation of portfolio that demonstrates suitable competencies.  Applicants applying for direct entry into the Diploma (not having completed the Certificate IV) will need to apply for RPL (Recognition of Prior Learning), part of which  requires completing several photographic assignments set by the College.
